Who I Am

I'm Steve Dunn, a Business Growth Adviser based in Birmingham. I work 1:1 with small businesses in the West Midlands, helping them navigate growth, productivity, and digital adoption — including AI.

I have an MBA, a Diploma in Digital Marketing, and a Specialist Award in AI Marketing from the Chartered Institute of Marketing. I've spent years working in and around growing businesses, and I understand both the opportunity AI represents and the reality of running a small business with limited time and budget.

That combination — business advisory experience, digital marketing background, and a genuine passion for making AI practical — is what drives this blog.

Why I Started This Blog

When ChatGPT launched in late 2022, I became genuinely fascinated by what AI could mean for smaller businesses. Not the headline-grabbing stuff — the practical, day-to-day potential to save time, reduce costs, and compete more effectively.

But most of the content out there was written for developers, academics, or enterprise teams with dedicated IT budgets. There was very little aimed at the SME owner trying to figure out where to start on a Tuesday afternoon with a full inbox.

That's the gap this blog is trying to fill.

Every post is written with one question in mind: what does this actually mean for a UK small business?

Plain English explanations of what's changing. Honest assessments of what's useful and what's hype. And practical steps you can take without needing a tech team or a big budget.

Topics covered include AI tools and how to use them, data privacy and compliance, AI governance, workforce and skills, and — increasingly — the shift towards AI agents and automation.

Beyond the Blog

I also host The AI SME Hub podcast, run workshops and webinars for SME audiences across the West Midlands, and advise businesses through the Business Growth West Midlands programme.
